IU Health Bloomington leadership and representatives from Indiana University came together at the Indiana University Regional Academic Health Center on Friday, April 28, to commemorate National Arbor Day with a tree planting.

IU Health South Central Region President Brian Shockney said:

“On this Arbor Day, we renew our dedication to being a positive force for our environment which has such an impact on the health of our communities. Environmental conservation and education are essential, and we are proud to join the Arbor Day Foundation in its efforts to encourage healthcare providers, patients, employees and neighbors to enjoy the benefits of healthier lifestyles through experiences with nature.

This is just one way we’re working to make Indiana a healthier state.”

The event culminated with planting our state tree, the Tulip Poplar, Liriodendron tulipifera, “Emerald City.” This tree is native to southern Indiana with a medium-sized yellow bloom, is fast-growing and can reach heights of 100’.

Jim Laughlin, MD, and Alan Biggs from IU Health, and Seth Debro and Tristan Johnson, from Indiana University assisted with the planting by placing the first shovels of soil.
